Create a minimal Slackware LiveUSB system.
Lately I’ve started to feel the need of setting up a portable linux system which will run from my usb-pendrive and carry it with me wherever I go so I can have instant access to all my data and development applications.
Nowadays a number of well-known distributions (*buntu/fedora/mandriva etc..)have options for installing on usb and other mini distro’s created for exactly this purpose.
But as a Slackware user and after I saw that zipSlack is left behind (still based on 11.0), Ive searched for a Slackware-based linux distribution for installing on my usb-flash-drive. After testing some of these distro’s though I soon realized that I want my Slackware system on usb!
Ofcourse latest Slackware 13.0 comes on a 4Gb .iso image and doesnt have a usb installation method so Ive started searching the internet about information on how to make a minimal Slackware system and then install it on usb-flashdrive.
The solution wasnt actually simple, but not too difficult to accomplish it either.
First we will install a minimal Slackware system based on tagfiles (so you dont have to check/uncheck packages, it will take you ages trust me…) on a partition, then we will a bootable USB Flash-drive Slackware mini system using LinuxLive scripts.
Ofcourse you can use your own tagfiles to make a lighter system or edit the tagfiles that are provided here.
If I found a much lighter Slackware configuration the tagfiles in this guide will be updated.
If you have a lighter and tested set of tagfiles and you’d like to share them, consider contacting me so I can add them here.
